I think it would be a great experience for you to do it yourself. You will be able to tell all your friends and relatives, "I mortised all those locks myself', and they will not have a clue of what you are talking about.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I can't really see my husband doing the work, especially chipping out the hole by hand. Guess mortise locks are just not widely used any more, maybe.

Find a local locksmith. They "should" have someone of staff with the skills to do this or know of someone. It will not be cheap and most often is best done at the factory before anything is done to the door. All part of the reasons most go with cylindrical locks these days.

My husband picked out the mortise lock for the custom front door as he thought that would be more secure. I chose a handleset that did not have a privacy cylindrical lock version, so that is why we went with the mortise lock. Didn't realize how much more complicated that would be.

Hindsight is 20/20. Nothing wrong with the mortise lock and it definitely is a secure type of locking system, but should have given the template to the door manufacturer and had it done in the shop before it left. Then it is not complicated at all, just $3-400, not your looking at easily double that.

Mortise locks are often the difference between a nice home and real money.

Have the door shop prep the doors for mortise. Installation will also be significantly more. Expect to pay extra for all this as unless specified the the bids these are not standard.
