How to fix peeling design on table

I don't know the correct terms, so please bear with me.

The photo below is a small table from Ashley furniture. The design is peeling off. The lighter sections are the peeled areas. The peeled pieces break up when I try to pick them up; they're thin or thinner than tissue paper (the gift-wrapping kind).

How to repair? Glue the available pieces in place and paint around them? What glue? What kind of paint? The table is too old (15 years?) to return. The table has not been used, other than to dust. It's in a guest room that hasn't been used. The other table is ok so far.

It will cost more to have it repaired than it is worth. A finish with adherence issues that is failing will continue to fail. To temporarily disguise it, you can try to faux paint it, if you have a decorative painter’s skill set. But the rest will continue to peel, and the writing is on the wall.

I would get some paint at the craft store suitable for wood to match the color of the bamboo leaves and carefully paint the lighter places with a tiny brush. It won't match the other table perfectly, but I think those shapes, if they were the same color as the rest of the dark areas will just blend in and look like they could be shapes from nature, like baby bird shadows, or thicker branches, etc. When it's dry, coat it with a clear coat of poly or similar (ask at the craft store what to use). Do a couple of coats and it should stop any more peeling.

The lighter color under the peeled design is some sort of gold paint or foil. One concern is the content of the paint dissolving that gold layer.

As you suggested, I'll go to a craft store and see what they suggest. There's very little help at the store.

If I mess it up, I can always just either scrape and paint with another easy design or learn how to print a "wallpaper" design from the web to glue on.

Like I really need another project.

Maybe a doily.
