Anyone Built a Wall between Kitchen & Great Room to Seperate?

| I'm currently looking to buy a home. I don't want a kitchen that opens up to a great room, I like a kitchen and a seperate den/family room.
I've dismissed many homes where I've liked everything else about the house, all because they had this open kitchen great room.
So, these days, it takes my mind way to long to kick in. Last night I thought about the possibility that, depending on the layout, one could build a wall and door way between these two areas.
My question is, has anyone on this board done this, or know of someone who did and if so, how it worked out for you/them - and if so, would it be possible to post before and after pictures? Or, can you recommend a site you know that may be able to provide info/pics.
Thanks for any insight and/or suggestions!

Sure it can be done. There are no restriction for load bearing, so any design will be purely aesthetic. You will need an architect for the design---unless you know of a good contractor who has design ability. Since the design/building trend has been away from the divided kitchen/dining/great room, I doubt if there are many examples of what you desire.

Just build a wall. You shouldn't need an architect since you are adding a wall, not removing one. It's an easy job for a good contractor - heck, even a bad one could do it- LOL! Good luck!

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person who didn't want the kitchen open to another room. You shouldn't have any problem finding a contractor who would be willing to do the work without hiring an architect. We recently relocated our kitchen into a new addition and I wanted to keep it separate but still have access to it. I have french doors that lead to adjoining rooms that block the mess in the kitchen but still allow the flow when I have a dinner gathering. My kitchen is large enough for a table that seats four although it is usually just the two of us. But when I have guests I use the dining room. I didn't want a bar and stools set up but of course the rest of the world loves that arrangement.

go for it...I have gotten use to our 'open' floor plan but listening to the dishwasher run, or the kids talking or them even having the kitchen tv on or on the phone on is very annoying when I am in the family room. Not to mention the weight I have gained by having the kitchen so readily available!

debelli, our kitchen will have an open doorway in the middle of a wall with a 1/2 wall and a large open arch on either side, between the kitchen and living room. I saw this in This Old House mag several years ago and I liked it because it was semi open and not totally open.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately, we didn't get the house. I'm looking at another now, not the same layout of kitchen, thankfully. BUT, if we don't get this one, more likely than not, I'll be dealing with the same issue and will definitely consider putting up the wall. Thanks again!!!

I have a great room open to the kitchen at one end of it. I had babies when I moved here from a home with a kitchen shut off from the family room. I was forever turning off the stove to check on whoever was crying. I wanted the open kitchen-great room configuration, and I still like it. I am not excluded from family events when I cook.
