the cost to raise a house up? (long island,ny)

Hi. I'm interested in purchasing a house that has no crawl space, no basement. I was told by the realtor that the house at one point flooded with 4 feet of water. The house is in a bay area in Island Park, NY. The price is reasonable but I have no idea the costs associated with adding a foundation or raising a house up. Does anyone have any advice or ideas of the costs? It's a small house, the lot is only 40x50, a very small 3bdrm "cottage". Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

(said with upturned pinky beside corner of mouth, whilst stroking a hairless cat)

"One hundred MILLION dollars! Mwahahahahahahhaha!"

Seriously, op is wasting her time. How can she get a meaningful idea over the internet? Would she expect a firm price from a contractor over the phone?

Just suck it up, and ask a contractor, who is licensed and experienced, to give you a quote. You will not be able to find out any other way. Any guesswork would be pointless.

Hello, I know exactly how you feel. I had a very similar problem a few years back. After reffering to a few local contractors about my problem, almost everyone highly recommended Dawn House Movers of yaphank. After i called them, they came out to my house and gave me an estimate which in reality was not to bad and was nowhere near $50,000 and they didnt even have to move the house back. They just raised the house up and dug directly undernieth the house. After the basement was complete, they came back and lowered it. Simple.

you can check them out at dawnhousemovers.com

mobgirl, I mean this with the uttmost respect and sincerity, but are you crazy?!?

Yours may be a smaller project, but I'm trying to understand why anyone would want to put themselves through this Stress, money and time..... intentionally.

You need to understand that any time you move your house, it affects everything. The walls, siding, windows and doors, roofing, cabinets...everything!

Here is $650,000 plus....and one year and half later. My advice, and I say this from personal experience, is to turn around and.....run as fast as you can...there's a reason why this house is priced low.....it's a money pit!

No crawl space, no basement sounds like a concrete slab. They have been raised, even moved to another site. I have not actually seen a slab house raised or moved, but I suspect that it would be the most difficult type to do successfully.

Try Davis Brothers house movers in Blue Point, LI , NY. I used them some years ago after getting several estimates to move my house. They were the most reasonable. Lots of people lift their houses to put in basements or lift them above the flood zone. It makes lots of sense. Don't listen to naysayers. Get some estimates from real housemovers, not contractors who do not know how to lift houses. You need a pro. Good luck!

In my area, the cost of building a house in around $95.00 (USD) per square foot.I have seen a wide range of price/square foot depending on what region of the country. Costs might be as low as $45.00/sf and as high as $175.00/sf.

Here is a link that might be useful: Raising structure

I don't know the cost. There are MAJOR flooding issues in some areas where I live. It is required that the houses be elevated one story in those areas if you plan to live there. It looks pretty weird to see an entire neighborhood elevated except for one or two houses. I would think that the people living in the nonelevated houses would get the hint.
