what to do about the stair case?

Posted by anita_dudevant (My Page) on

I am planning to remodel the floor and a couple of other area in the house. One option is to replace the porclain tile floor with travertine in beige(light or medium) tone throughout downstair. I am also thinking of replacing the stair balusters with dark wrought iron ones.

My question is what to do with all the other white painted parts of the stair especially these 4 steps at the cornor expansion of the stair(as shown in the picture and I don;t know what to call it).

Will it be a good idea and is it do-able to stain the post/rail/starting step/tread to dark tone? And how big the job will be if I need to hire someone to do it?

I am new to the forum and would really appreicate your suggestions and comments. Thanks, anita

Everything related to the staircase in the picture is white all the way up including the two bullisters. Will not question your decision to change what appears to be a very nice staitway. One option would be to paint everything that is now white, black.

RE: what to do about the stair case?

I am about to refinish my wooden floors and since I am going darker, I had to make a decision on my light wood newels and rail plus my white peg ballusters. So, I am changing it all out to dark box newels with wrought iron balusters. I have hired a contractor to coordinate everything so it will be mostly completed over spring break when we are out of the house.

I would remove the expansion step area of 4 and replace it with drywall and trim. I am attaching a few of the photos I am using for inspiration. Hope it helps!
