Ideas Needed for Covering Front Porch

| We have been mulling over how to cover an open area between the existing framed porches on the front of our house. I found the plans for a similar house and it had a shed roof that began under the window above the uncovered are, connected to the two roof structures and sloped down to a gutter at the front. The best estimate for that was $3,300 including drawings and permits.
We are thinking of something less obvious while still providing some rain protection. The uncovered area is approximately 3 feet wide (existing gutter to gutter) by 6 feet deep. We live in the PNW and get very little snow but we do get some pretty strong winds that hit that East side of the house.
Any ideas or suggestions to help us out in the thought process would be very much appreciated! Here is what it looks like now:

| Tear off both existing roofs and build a hipped porch roof straight across the whole area? |

Stretch a blue tarp from ridge to ridge, and weigh it down with tires. Another idea would be to use a silver or a green tarp. Casey |
