Tear Stains

The problem we're having is that Romeo, my white pomeranian, has had very watery eyes for about the last month, and he is getting terrible stains under and between his eyes. We picked up the tear-away pads at PetSmart, but they sure aren't working as well as we hoped... any ideas? He's white, is there a bleaching solution to this?

-THANKS!

I'm assuming you have had your dog to the vet for an explanation/possible course of treatment for the excessive tearing in the first place?

No we've been trying to hold out until his next vet appt. since it's not hurting him and it's not urgent... $50 right off the bat just to see the vet!

If the tearing is a sudden occurence I'd still go to the vet. One of my previous dogs developed watery eyes and it turned out he had an ulcerative cornea..........a painful condition.

Does your dog eat pig ears or other leather-type treats? Those were a cause of tear staining in my poodle-x. Once I stopped the treats the stains went away.

Are you using the eye cleaners every day? It takes real persistance to clean those stains away. Actually the stained area probably won't clear up. What you are trying to do is keep the new growth from staining as it comes in. If it just started recently and he's not squinting or keeping the eyes closed it may just be a seasonal allergy.

My Papillon has had watery eyes since she was puppy. I was told by the vet that small dogs often just don't have the most effective tear ducts. She was put on an anti-histimine incase it was an allergy, but she still has teary eyes.

I wash her face regularly with a washcloth and warm water. I've found that keeping the area clean and dry as often as possible prevents tear stains from occuring. She did have one persistant stain which we were able to get rid of with a product called "Crystal Eyes". It's important to use a washcloth or towel rather than a cotton ball, because the abrasiveness of the washcloth really scrubs away the stain.

I'm thinking it's allergies... in the last couple days he's been sneezing and rubbing his eyes.... when I come home from work he looks much better, and as soon as we go outside the symptoms of sneezing and watery eyes really have picked up... We're going to the vet first thing next week... until then he's on house arrest! Tell me more about "Clear Eyes?"

I use this product called Purifeye it gets rid of the ugly tear stains permanently.(Their website is www.PETPURITY.com) Its amazing because I sprinke on their food and it does the rest. I tried every other product on the market and nothing worked. It surely does the job well.

The tylosin based products such as Angels Eyes do work very well but i understand owners concerns about using antibiotics on a long term basis.

I guess that those concerns are highlighted by the fact that angels eyes are very coy about mentioning the tylosinantibiotic in thier product

Tylosin WILL KILL HORSES SO KEEP IT AWAY FROM THEM

We used Angels eyes until it was banned in the UK and the rest of Europe.

a friend recommended another tear stain remover- Angels delight.

The great thing about Angels delight is that it is 100% natural like purifeye. Angels delight however was developed as a holistic "cure" for a wide range of conditions and they discovered that it stopped red tear and coat stains in dogs and cats.

i did find that angels delight took longer to start working than the angels eyes

you can get more info from here
