My furnace died over the weekend and I am in the market looking for a new furnace and would like to take this opportunity to change my air conditioner as well.

Here is a quote I received from a local Trane dealer:

Trane TUD080R9V3 variable speed 2 stage (XV80), 80% AFUE, 80k BTU; Aspen Coil; Trane 2.5 ton condenser 4TTX5030A1000A, 16 SEER.

Quote = $5400 (all inclusive)

It is eligible for total of $1500 fed tax credits. In addition to the above the quote also included replaceing the lineset and return drop.

So the total cost will be $5400 - $1500 = $3900. Is this a competetive deal? Appreciate your thoughts & feedback.

It is helpful if you provide a little more information - general location, approx size/age of house.

As others have said, on a new install why not use a Trane coil? The Trane unit may be from their 16seer line, but actual performance will depend on the coil match.

Be sure that the units are matched -ask for an ARI certificate - it will list the SEER for that combination.

[I am going to go add a sample certificate to the website noted below right now.]

Always get more than one estimate/quote.

I have some forms and guides you may find useful at the link below.
Check out #2 the Contractor Score Card from ACCA. It gives an easy way to compare quotes, helps you ask the right questions and evaluate the answers.

Sounds low. Probably using the Aspen coil to get the SEER for the tax credit. 3rd party coils rate higher than factory coils though that has been limited in the recent year. They are computer simulated not actually tested so the rating is more liberal. Make sure you are getting a 2 stage stat.
