email file attachments taking too long to download

For the past couple of weeks, I've been having a problem downloading email attachments. They are pictures or documents from individuals (not forwards or downloads from the internet), most of which are 67kb or less.

I'm working on windows xp, with DSL. This hasn't been a problem before. I've cleaned out the cache, browser history, temporary files, etc., run defrag, and I can't remember what else. It doesn't make any difference if you try to save the file or open it.

I'm running McAffee triple threat as the anti-virus/spy/firewall....

Any thoughts?

Look at its configurations or preferences on whatever email program you use for mail. You might see some security settings for max file size or disallow attachments that are of a file type that might be susceptible of containing virus or exploits.

Your security applications may be scanning the attachment before loading it also.

Sure 1. Go to your Picasa web albums page and get to the page with the picture you want to post. Do that in a different window or different window tab if you want to keep your gardenweb page open. 2. On the right side of the photo album will be a statement that is blue that says "Link to this Photo." Left click on it. 3. That will open a drop down menu with 2 options -- "link" and "embed image." I use the "embed image" option. Under the words "embed image" will be a box with computer code in it. Take your curser and put it over the box and left click such that the contents of that box are highlighted. Then you just cut and paste what's in the box into your Gardenweb post (right click over the highligted text, left click on Copy, and then find where you want to put the stuff and set your cursor there by left clicking the spot, then right click to open the menu and this time choosing Paste by left clicking it). 4. Voila -- you're done. Preview your post to make sure it worked. Good Luck Kathy

When I look at the preference of the file I got downloaded, it says it has audio...no video. That file has no video then, just audio as far as I know. I found where you can play a video from an online store and it says that is usually where they are stored. Do I go to my account and download the video from there to my Media Player? Yes try it nothing to loose, just download it to the desktop for now, when it finishes just double click and see if windows media player attempts to play it. Let us know. At some point it's also possible you may need to install / download-----> K-Lite Codec Pack... If you have any issues playing DVD'S. That's why I wanted you to try a known good DVD, just to see if it plays, if it does then you would more then likely not need to install the K-Lite Codec Pack With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even several less common formats. Oh my god!!! same as we had. we had three neighbors one an ex-cop and their 11 year of daughter all watched as Alex and his buddy carried off my Travertine 19 pieces of pool coping. Gary and his son Tom called me a liar and told other customers I was a crazy Anaheim hills lady making wild accusations. They covered it up, but eventually had to admit and replace the travertine. 6 months of stress and aggravation and tears, but eventually the pain stopped and they left. It didn't need to be this way. We put cameras in after that! The cement guy did not use rebar and everything cracked within days everywhere...they also tried not to put the drains in around the pool. Check their work...the drains have to be connected...mine were not....we pulled up chairs and sat down and made them redo the drains. They still missed one. I am so sorry that you are going through this too. They took all the joy out of my pool for me. Don't use their pool start up guy Fred. Pick your own. He charged me $375 to pour two bottles of muradic acid into my pool. Apparently that is start up. Do it yourself.

Since you're in a Program that isn't Windows a Restart/Reboot most likely won't work. Have you tried Right Clicking on the Email and then choosing either Cancel or Delete!

I don't think that either of these are the problem. I have a second desktop (older one, but only by about 3 months) which is running the exact same programs as the main one. I got is used and it had been scrubbed with all the programs being reloaded using the same programs, anti-virus, etc. as the main one. Both have the same amount of disk space and RAM.

When I access the email account from the other computer, I have no trouble downloading email attachments. There has to be something corrupted, or a malware or something which McAfee hasn't picked up (is this possible?), but I don't know where to look or how to approach this....

You may think they are the same but some small setting no doubt vary. What is the 3 digit suffix of the attachments causing the issue? What email program are you using? Does the older machine also run McAfee with the same settings?

The reason I think they are the same is that after the secondary computer (the one which actually works on downloading) was scrubbed, I re-loaded the files from the disks from which I loaded the primarily computers programs. These were both done using the install wizard so I changed no individual settings.

The suffix on the attachments which I can't download are .jpg and .doc. It doesn't matter from whom. As I stated, they are fairly small sized. None of these are downloading correctly (at all). The computer previously worked fine and I changed no settings.

The email program is Yahoo. I am accessing them throught he same ISP, and they are the same mailbox.

Both machines are running off the same McAfee with the same settings as I stated above as they were both installed by me without changing any settings.

Ok so try this perhaps. Click start, click Run, type ipconfig /release click OK

A small black screen will appear momentarily and vanish

Click start, click Run, type ipconfig /renew click OK

Note the only space is after 'ipconfig', is that any better?

well have your run a malwarebytes full scan on the pc to see if it in fact has an infection? that would be my first move.
update malwarebytes then run a full scan and see what shows up, let it clean what it finds. If it does find infections you might want to post the log here for further help.

McAfee could be your problem. If it is scanning downloads as those come into your computer, it may have slowed. Also, large downloads require a lot of RAM. If you see a lot of hard drive activity during a download, it could be that you are low on memory or that the memory is not being managed well.
