What is your budget? What are you thinking you want to do? Replace the entire mantle remove the fireplace? Or change the brass? Maybe paint the brass black? What do you like about it? What do you dislike? Do you want to remove the base step? Do you want to cover it with a new surround?

I agree that budget needs to be a primary consideration. It looks like you have already removed the floor, unless that is an old picture. Having the floor out, makes it easier to remove that lower step. I personally would pull almost everything off/out and then mimic whichever of the inspiration pictures just above my post appeal to you.

Also, I am personally not loving the dark paint colors in the right corner.

Not sure I am following you on this. The first picture shows the room being remodeled and the paint in the corner indicates you were considering painting the room a darker color. Has the remodel been completed? Is the last picture the actual current state?

At minimum, remove the stained wood on the mantel and the brass fireplace door.

We are currently in a remodel, due to a fire. I uploaded the other pictures to show the layout of our furniture and styling. I’d like to square it off and remove upper mantle piece. Maybe new tile surround?

We don’t want to spend a ton of money so the step will likely stay. I want to take out all the molding and trim to see what we are working with. Trying to decide so we can get it done before the painters come in.
