Patio to deck combo - how to furnish etc.

My patio/deck is south and west facing which has its own set of problems. Terribly hot mid afternoon in the summer. Not in the budget to build a real patio cover with shades. I have used drapes before which worked okay for blocking the sun from the west.

My current problem is how to furnish the combination. I am having the deck boards replaced with composite. Which way should they go, length or width. I will have to intall additional joists to accomodate the composite boards.

The table and chairs are off the kitchen area. Would a round table break up the length of the area? The patio curves on the front. The deck is off the primary bedroom. There's a river and mountain view off the end of the deck so I don't want to obscure that.

Should the pergola be all white?

Recommendations arre greatly appreciated.

The deck boards should be laid perpendicular to the joists. So likely they will be the same direction as what you have. Composite boards can get very hot. Since this is south, west and no shade that may not be the best material.

How's do you plan to use this space? Watching the morning view and sunset? On a couch or seated at a table? Firepit?

Since there's a curve on the outside edge of the patio I don't see anything wrong with having a round table. But would a round table be more difficult to walk around? It seems like what you have is working. How many people do you want to be able to seat? You have room on the deck side for sectional seating or a sofa and two chairs, or four chairs - it depends on how many people you usually have to accommodate. The placement of the pergola seems a little random. If you ever get an awning extending from the back wall of the house it's going to interfere. But if the deck railings are going to still be white after the replacement of the floorboards then the pergola should be white. However, I think the wood top looks fine since it matches the deck floor. Have you tried an adjustable umbrella on the table to block sunlight?

Kandrewspa, Thanks for the suggestions.

The width of the patio at the curve is 13'. Likely would want a table to accommodate 6. The pergola wasn't placed correctly when build but wasn't meant to be a patio cover. Now it is just for architectural interest. I do have a rectangular tilting umbrella that helps a overhead sun.

Truthfully, I don't use the deck a lot. Sometimes I have coffee at the bistro table. I do want to maintain the view from the patio. I took a great video of fireworks accross the river last 4th of July.

Here’s a shade concept which may be helpful. Crank-down UV sun shade. Available in various widths/colors and can drop up to 6 feet. I will be installing on 3 sides. This one is 6’ wide to leave the steps unobstructed
