From The Lord of the Rings , Gandalf speaking:

It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.

This is kind of long, but I love it. It's a quotation about why the little things matter, from page 197 of the novel We are Called to Rise by Laura McBride.

It all matters. That someone turns out the lamp, picks up the wind-blown wrapper, says hello to the invalid, pays at the unattended lot, listens to the repeated tale, folds the abandoned laundry, plays the game fairly, tells the story honestly, acknowledges help, gives credit, says good night, resists temptation, wipes the counter, waits at the yellow, makes the bed, tips the maid, remembers the illness, congratulates the victor, accepts the consequences, takes a stand, steps up, offers a hand, goes first, goes last, chooses the small portion, teaches the child, tends to the dying, comforts the grieving, removes the splinter, wipes the tear, directs the lost, touches the lonely, is the whole thing.

As to how I made the 93 years - I think it's mainly genes.

Some in our family appear to have some weakness of lungs. When I was about 16 I began to smoke ... stayed at it about 6 mos. or so, didn't like the taste and, learning from paternal Grandma who lived with us, and Dad, who did also (Mom had been in psych hosp from when I almost 6, died when I 13) to be somewhat frugal, the cost of the cigs - I quit them.

Sometimes when someone and I approach a store door at the same time, I often motion them to go first, or hold the door for them, "You go first, please: I'm retired - I have more time than you do!" ... usually results in a nod of thanks and a smile.

Hi Annie, interesting that the Kahlil Gibran quote refers to carrying pain as in childbirth rather than bearing a load.

And Olychick, one needs to look back when, walking with the traffic while hitchhiking and a vehicle approaches facing you in the opposite lane, you need to look back to see whether a vehicle is coming up behind you, to move over to give that driver lots of room to go by you while staying in his/her and your lane.

Not only is it the legal, neighbourly, considerate thing to do ... it may well preclude your getting run over!

In a dispute between a chunk of a ciuple of tons of metal and a mere human ... guess which wins?

I love that, Rusty. That especially resonates when I think of my reaction when I heard that a former customer had died, unfortunately self-inflicted. Even though my interaction with him was very minor, I felt (rightly or wrongly) that he left a hole in my life by "removing" himself. I was likely just one of the many insignificant contacts in his life, yet he formed a valued part of my identity.

It is our essential nature to be compassionate. From the moment we're born our mother takes care of us. Without this care we would not survive. This experience is our first opportunity to learn that compassion is the root of all happiness. However, this natural appreciation of compassion seems to fade once we go to school. We need to be reminded that good health and a peaceful state of mind are founded on love and compassion.

When someone tells you to calm down, channel Walter Sobchak

The Big Lebowski offers endless life lessons. Rugs really tie the room together, for instance; it's totally acceptable to pay for milk by check; most problems can be solved by bowling; and it's never a good idea to fight a stranger in the Alps. And the Coen brothers' finest cinematic offering doesn't skimp on providing a great comeback to "calm down." Tell your offender, "I'm perfectly calm, Dude," and if that doesn't suffice, add, "Calmer than you are, Dude." If it doesn't get them off your back, at least they'll probably laugh.

Six ways to respond when someone tells you to calm down

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living in someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma -- which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And, most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

I spent a lot of years trying to outrun or outsmart vulnerability by making things certain and definite, black and white, good and bad. My inability to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability limited the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: Love, belonging, trust, joy, and creativity to name a few.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others' to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have live. This is to have succeeded.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.

Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.

· We have to think about the reality of the situation and remind ourselves that the basic orientation of our hearts needs to be altruistic. The peace of mind that results from this brings us physical comfort too. We have better health and sounder sleep, and we can make the best use of our inner resources. When we adopt an altruistic perspective, it brings us a broader, more far-reaching outlook—courage.

Having lived in the countryside, 6 miles or so from a village and 12 to 20 from the city, with no car for just over two years now, this person over 90 has done quite a lot of hitchhiking.

I find myself somewhat surprised that more than half of the people who offer rides are women, few of them younger ones.

I think that more women feel substantially self sufficient and assured than perhaps we've thought.

Recently when a couple stopped for me, perhaps in their 40s, lady driving, husband passenger, with late teen or early 20s daughter riding in back seat, passenger side, when the daughter moved to behind the driver, I said to her jokingly that no one could accuse her of being shiftless, for she'd moved to give me a place to sit.

We had an interesting conversation, and when I told of more than half of the people who picked me up being women, I went on to say that when a woman driving sees an old fart like me standing at the side of the road asking folks to share their car for a while, she must be feeling pretty comfortable in her own skin to consider pulling to a stop at the side of the road to offer him a ride. They agreed and there was some interesting discussion.

As we part, a number have spoken of how they've enjoyed the experience, have offered to shake hands, found me somewhat inspirational, etc.

Just Let Them
If they want to choose something or someone over you, LET THEM.
If they want to go weeks without talking to you, LET THEM.
If they are okay with never seeing you, LET THEM.
If they are okay with always putting themselves first, LET THEM.
If they are showing you who they are and not what you perceived them to be, LET THEM.
If they want to follow the crowd, LET THEM.
If they want to judge or misunderstand you, LET THEM.
If they act like they can live without you, LET THEM.
If they want to walk out of your life and leave,
hold the door open, AND LET THEM.

Let them lose you.
You were never theirs, because you were always your own.

So let them.

Let them show you who they truly are, not tell you.
Let them prove how worthy they are of your time.
Let them make the necessary steps to be a part of your life.
Let them earn your forgiveness.
Let them call you to talk about ordinary things.
Let them take you out on a Thursday.
Let them talk about anything and everything just because it’s you they are talking to.
Let them have a safe place in you.
Let them see the heart in you that didn’t harden.
Let them love you.

I just found this thread. Enjoyable to read! I'll add a few quotes I've collected over the years.

Remember, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

-- Dale Carnegie

The only time you should look down on someone else, is if you're giving them your hand to lift them up.

"Where flowers bloom, so does hope." - Lady Bird Johnson

"Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people."--Eleanor Roosevelt

"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." -- Einstein

"Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will..."

Yoda from Star Wars

(cue Vader's heavy breathing)

From Master Yoda-

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering."

Four things you can't recover:

The stone........after the throw. The word......after it's said. The occasion......after it's missed. The time.....after it's gone.

These are more meme-like

Failure isn’t falling down. Failure is if you don’t stand back up.

Don't think about yesterday, you don't live there anymore.

Don't think about tomorrow, you're not there yet.

Live today.

"If I give up now I will soon be back to where I started......and when I started out, I so desperately wanted to be where I am today"

Trust takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair.

Carpe diem and ignorum turdum ... seize the day and ignore the turds.

“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.”

When we are totally absorbed in ourselves, we are vulnerable and easily become prey to disarray, opposition, feeling of powerlessness or anxiety. If instead, we experience strong empathy and unconditional kindness in the face of another’s suffering, resignation gives way to courage, depression to love, small-mindedness to an openness to all those around us.

Matthieu Ricard, The Art of Meditation.
